Chapter 18: Beast

The ground quaked beneath their feet as Sen, Dain, and Shera stood at the edge of the shattered street, their eyes locked on the monstrous humanoid hybrid tearing through what was left of Allatora. The creature’s massive, black-and-white form loomed like a nightmare, its grotesque muscles bulging with every movement as it dragged its bone-spiked claws through the ruins. Its torn, leathery wings flared wide as it leapt from building to building with terrifying speed, each landing shaking the ground and reducing structures to rubble beneath its weight. Yellow eyes blazed with ruthless intelligence as it snatched fleeing civilians, crushing them in its grip before hurling their broken bodies aside without a thought. The deep, guttural snarls that rumbled from its throat were punctuated by sharp cracks of bone and debris splintering beneath its feet. Sen clenched his fists, Intergy crackling faintly around his hands, while Dain’s flames danced at his fingertips, ready to ignite. Shera stood poised between them, a faint aura of wind swirling at her back, watching the creature’s movements with focused precision.

Dain was the first to move. He ignited his Intergy beneath his feet, launching himself forward in a burst of fire. His body blurred with speed as he closed the distance, his arms already extended as spheres of compressed flame spun into existence between his palms. With a sharp thrust, he hurled the fireballs in rapid succession, each one screaming through the air and exploding against the hybrid’s hulking frame. The creature staggered under the assault, smoke and flame engulfing its chest and shoulders, but it didn’t slow. Instead, it powered through the inferno, its massive form breaking free of the smoke, unfazed. Its yellow eyes locked on Dain with a cold, calculated focus, and with a guttural snarl, it opened its jagged maw wide. A concentrated beam of raw Intergy erupted from its throat, a blinding torrent of energy that shot straight toward Dain like a cannon blast.

Sen (thinking): Dain!

Sen reacted instantly. He surged forward, light and dark Intergy crackling at his hands. A wave of shadow lashed out from his palm, striking the creature’s ankle with crushing force. The hybrid’s leg buckled, and it stumbled, the beam of Intergy swerving wildly as it lost its aim. The blast scorched a deep trench into the ruined street beside Dain, missing him by inches. The beast dropped to one knee with a thunderous impact, stone and dust erupting from the crater it created. Sen’s attack had forced it low, but only for a moment.

Shera didn’t hesitate. She extended both arms, sending razor-thin slices of wind screaming toward the creature. The blades struck its exposed side in a flurry of sharp gusts, but the sound that followed was not of flesh being cut— it was of wind breaking harmlessly against hardened hide. The attacks dissipated the moment they touched its black-and-white skin, as if slicing into steel. The hybrid’s wings snapped open, and with a powerful downstroke, it rose to its feet once more, ignoring Shera entirely.

With an earsplitting roar, the creature launched itself at Dain again, wings propelling it through the air with shocking speed. Dain threw himself into motion, flames igniting beneath his heels as he dodged sideways just in time to avoid another barrage of Intergy blasts that detonated behind him, showering him in debris. He skidded to a stop and countered, flames coiling tightly along his arm before he released them in a sweeping arc. The fire lashed out like a whip, aiming for the creature’s wings, but the hybrid twisted in midair, avoiding the strike by a breath. It retaliated with a downward swipe of its clawed hand, forcing Dain to leap back once more, barely avoiding the slicing talons.

Sen surged forward again, his hands glowing with searing light. Twin beams shot from his palms, striking the creature square in the chest. The blasts illuminated the entire street as they impacted, their force kicking up a storm of dust and light, but the hybrid barely reacted. It absorbed the attack, pushing through the beams like a tank through a storm, its feet dragging deep gouges into the stone as it advanced.

Gritting his teeth, Dain charged again, this time focusing everything into a single, precise point. Flames gathered at his fingertips, condensing into a thin, concentrated beam of white-hot fire. He fired it directly into the creature’s face, the searing energy drilling into its skull. The beast recoiled, its head jerking back as smoke and scorched flesh sizzled around the point of impact. It wasn’t much, but it was the first attack that seemed to leave any mark at all.

Dain (thinking): It’s tough!

Shera moved to flank it, launching another barrage of slicing wind, angling for its joints and neck, but again the gusts failed to penetrate its thick hide. The creature’s body seemed impervious to the wind’s cutting edges, shrugging off her assault as though it were. Her expression tightened, frustration creeping in as the hybrid turned its gaze back to them, its massive claws flexing in anticipation of another attack.

Shera clenched her fists, the wind still swirling at her fingertips, but her voice was tight with frustration.

Shera: Damn… nothing seems to hurt it.

As if sensing her doubt, the hybrid’s yellow eyes snapped toward her. Without warning, it leapt into the air, wings spreading wide as it rocketed toward her with terrifying speed. The wind around Shera kicked into a frenzy as she instinctively braced herself, but the creature was already closing the gap. Sen reacted instantly. He hurled a volley of spears, forged from his intertwining light and darkness, the twin forces crackling as they screamed through the air. The spears struck the hybrid mid-flight, one puncturing its shoulder, another driving into its ribcage. Dark energy crackled and seared the flesh, while beams of light pierced and scorched the skin. But the beast didn’t flinch. It pushed through the assault as though the strikes were nothing.

Shera dove to the side at the last moment as the hybrid crashed down where she’d been standing, the sheer force of its landing exploding outward in a pulse of raw Intergy. The shockwave slammed into her even as she dodged, sending her tumbling across the shattered ground. She hit hard, skidding along jagged stone, pain shooting through her side as the air was ripped from her lungs.

Dain: Oh, damn. Shera!

Dain’s teeth bared in fury as he summoned his flames again, this time condensing them into a blazing sword of pure fire. Without hesitation, he charged the beast, his body surrounded by a thin veil of burning heat. As the hybrid began to rise from its crouch, Dain leapt onto its back, his momentum carrying him high before he drove the fire-forged blade down with all his weight. The sword sank deep into the thick muscle between the creature’s shoulder blades, flames erupting outward from the wound in a burst of searing heat. For the first time, the hybrid roared in genuine pain. Its wings flared wide, thrashing violently as it staggered under the assault. Brown ichor poured from the wound, steam rising as the fire seared deep into its flesh. Dain gritted his teeth, holding on as the creature bucked and twisted beneath him, trying to throw him off. But the hybrid was not done. One massive hand swung back, claws wrapping around Dain’s torso with crushing force. It yanked him free from its back, gripping him tightly, its fingers digging into his ribs. Dain struggled, flames flaring wildly around him in a desperate attempt to burn free, but the grip only tightened. The beast raised him high, preparing to crush the life from him in an instant.

Sen (thinking): Damn it, Dain.

Sen rocketed forward in a streak of blinding light, propelling himself with a burst of speed that cracked the stone beneath his feet. At the last second, he flipped his momentum, channeling a surge of darkness into his free hand. With a sharp thrust, he unleashed a concentrated blast of shadow directly into the hybrid’s face. The dark energy struck like a hammer, exploding across its features in a wave of cold so intense it began to freeze solid the moment it made contact.

Frost spread rapidly along the creature’s head, crystallizing over its eyes in jagged shards. The hybrid’s roar cut short as its jaw locked, its grip on Dain loosening slightly as its movements slowed under the sudden onslaught of ice. Dain gasped for breath as he tore himself free of the weakening grip, flames reigniting around him as he tumbled from the hybrid’s hand and hit the ground hard. He rolled to his feet quickly, battered but alive.

Dain (to Sen): Sorry you have to keep saving me—

His words were cut short as the hybrid suddenly shattered the ice encasing its head with a violent jerk, sending shards flying in all directions. Before Sen could react, one of the creature’s massive arms whipped forward in a brutal, sweeping arc. The blow connected squarely with Sen’s side, the sheer force sending him hurtling through the air like a ragdoll. He crashed through a half-collapsed stone wall with a deafening crack before rolling to a stop, a trail of dust and rubble in his wake. Sen groaned, his body already surrounded by a faint shimmer of Intergy that had absorbed much of the impact, but pain still shot through his ribs as he struggled to push himself back to his feet.

Seizing the opening, Dain roared and fired a concentrated beam of fire directly into the hybrid’s torso. The stream of intense heat struck true, searing through flesh and muscle, causing the beast to stagger for half a step. Smoke and scorched ichor poured from the wound, but even so, the damage was shallow compared to the sheer bulk of the creature. It powered through the pain, teeth bared in a snarl, and charged at Dain without hesitation.

The two collided in a brutal exchange. Dain ducked low beneath a sweeping claw, his body twisting as he sent another stream of fire slashing across the creature’s ribs. He followed up with a precise kick, flames blasting from his foot to launch him backward just in time to avoid the hybrid’s retaliatory strike. The Zagon absorbed every hit without flinching, its massive form surging forward, claws carving deep trenches into the earth as it chased him relentlessly. Dain’s flames lashed out again and again, each strike landing with precision, but the beast simply endured, pressing closer, its raw strength overpowering any ground Dain gained.

From across the battlefield, Shera finally pushed herself up from the rubble, coughing through grit and smoke as she steadied her footing. She wiped blood from her lip, her gaze sharpening as she took in the scene. She thrust her hands forward, sending slicing waves of wind at the creature in rapid succession. The blades howled as they cut through the air, striking the hybrid’s shoulders and back, but it didn’t even glance her way. Its focus remained solely on Dain, advancing with single-minded fury as though Shera’s attacks were no more than a passing breeze.

Shera (thinking): Damn it. It doesn’t even care about me!

Shera looked over the distance, noticing Sen getting up slowly.

Shera (thinking): I can at least heal.

Without wasting another moment, she summoned a sharp current of wind beneath her feet and launched herself toward Sen. Her body cut through the smoke and debris like an arrow, but mid-flight, the hybrid’s yellow eyes flicked toward her. Its instincts were immediate. One massive arm swung wide, claws slicing through the air with brutal force. Shera barely had time to react before the blow connected. Pain exploded through her side as she was knocked clean from her trajectory, her body spinning violently through the air before slamming into the side of a shattered wall. Dust and stone showered down as she crumpled to the ground, coughing harshly as she fought to breathe.

Meanwhile, Dain was doing everything he could to keep the Zagon occupied. His flames erupted in every direction, searing fireballs pounded into the beast’s thick hide, flashes of intense flame burst at its feet, blades of fire slashed across its body, and concentrated beams drilled into its armor-like skin. But still, the creature refused to slow. It advanced on him relentlessly, each step driving deep into the cracked stone, each movement filled with brutal purpose.

Then the hybrid opened its jaws once more, and a thick stream of Intergy erupted from its maw, a beam of condensed energy screaming toward Dain. In immediate response, Dain unleashed a counterblast of fire, his concentrated flames slamming into the beam head-on. The collision exploded in a flash of blinding light, raw energy and flame battling for dominance. Each time the beast fired, Dain either dodged by mere inches or met the onslaught with his own power, their exchange lighting up the ruins with chaotic brilliance.

In the distance, Sen finally straightened fully, his breathing heavy but controlled. His hands were outstretched in front of him, a deep, concentrated sphere of darkness swirling violently in his palms. The energy pulsed with raw cold, shadows distorting the air around it. For the entire duration of Dain’s battle, Sen had been channeling everything into this single, devastating attack. And now, he released it. The concentrated ball of darkness screamed forward, cutting through the chaos like a black comet. It struck the hybrid square in the side with crushing force, detonating on impact in a burst of freezing shadow. The sheer momentum of the hit hurled the beast backward, its massive frame crashing through debris and stone buildings as it tumbled across the ruins, kicking up clouds of dust in its wake. For a moment, the battlefield fell still.

Shera groaned softly as she pushed herself upright again, dragging in ragged breaths as she placed a trembling hand over her ribs. Light Intergy swirled around her, soothing her battered body as she focused on healing her injuries, patching herself up just enough to move again.

Sen and Dain landed heavily beside Shera, their breathing ragged from the brutal fight. Sen gave Shera a quick glance, his expression tight with concern, while Dain knelt down briefly.

Dain (to Shera): You good?

Shera (struggling): Sort of.

Dain (to Sen): And you?

Sen: I’m fine.

Dain: This Zagon is insanely strong.

Sen: It takes so much force to even bother it.

Dain (to Shera): I hate to say it… but I think you might need to step out of this fight.

Shera: What about you two?

Dain: We’ll have to manage. But your wind abilities seem to not have any effect on it.

The ground rumbled faintly beneath them as the dust began to settle, revealing the hybrid’s massive form slowly rising from the wreckage. Its wings flexed with a guttural crack, debris falling from its shoulders as it pushed itself upright, yellow eyes burning hotter than before. Despite the damage they had inflicted, the Zagon cracked its neck with a sharp twist and let out a low, rumbling snarl that reverberated through the broken streets.

Sen (quietly): It’s not done yet.

Dain exhaled slowly, his fire already gathering in his hands again.

Dain: Damn it. This is going to be rough.

Shera: I can at least distract it.

Sen: You are not playing decoy for us.

Shera: I have to do something!

Sen: And it’s not going to be that—

Dain: It’s coming at us!

The hybrid launched itself forward with terrifying speed, its massive wings propelling it through the air like a missile. In an instant, it was above them, one colossal fist cocked back and glowing with surging Intergy. With a deafening roar, it brought its punch crashing down into the ground where they stood. The impact detonated in a violent explosion of raw Intergy, sending a shockwave in all directions. Sen, Dain, and Shera managed to dodge at the last second, scattering to avoid the direct hit, but the blast radius was far greater than they anticipated. The concussive force slammed into them mid-air, hurling all three back like ragdolls, their bodies crashing through broken stone and debris as they skidded across the shattered ground. Dust and heat filled the air as they struggled to regain their footing, the Zagon already turning its burning gaze toward them once more.

Sen: I need you two to stay out for a moment.

Dain: No the hell not! Are you insane!?

Sen: Dain, I need you to get an angle on it. I’ll be the one to distract it. I need you to use everything you have when you see an opening.

Shera: Guys! It’s charging again!

The Zagon was readying itself to fly towards them.

Sen: When you see an opening, strike it. Aim for its head if you can!

Dain: Sen you’re not—

Before Dain could finish, Sen surged forward in a flash of blinding light, his body streaking ahead of Dain and Shera as he closed the distance with reckless speed. the hybrid Zagon launched itself forward again, wings tearing through the air with thunderous force. Its massive body hurtled toward them like a living warhead, claws extended and Intergy crackling violently around its fists. Illuminated by his own Intergy, Sen became a streak of radiant energy, barreling straight toward the monstrous Zagon with unwavering focus. The ground quaked beneath the force of their impending collision, dust and debris spiraling in their wake as Dain and Shera watched, hearts pounding, knowing there was no turning back now.

Shera: He’s crazy!

Dain: Damn it!

Sen’s body gleamed as he shot forward, a comet of white-gold light streaking through the crumbling ruins of Allatora. His hands gripped twin blades, one forged of searing brilliance, its blade radiating light that left glowing embers in the air with every movement. The other sword crackled with cold darkness, its edge releasing faint wisps of black mist that crystallized into ice along its trail. He spun them once, their opposing energies rippling through the air of fire and frost, before locking his focus on the oncoming Zagon.

The Zagon’s wings flared wide as it roared, propelling itself forward with a concussive burst of Intergy. Its clawed hands tore through the air, brimming with raw power, and its mouth opened to unleash a massive beam of compressed Intergy that scorched a path straight toward Sen. But Sen was faster. He drove his foot behind him, summoning a thin path of darkness beneath himself. It materialized beneath his step as he skated forward in a controlled glide. His speed amplified, and with a quick twist of his foot, he reversed direction, gliding backward along the dark trail, evading the beam by inches as it ripped past in a column of devastation. As Sen glided backward, his light sword pulsed. He pointed it toward the ground, and from its tip, he unleashed a wave of light that propelled him forward. The trail behind him erupted in a blaze of fire as he shot forward like a bullet, light sword drawn back. He clashed against the Zagon’s waiting claw, their impacts detonating in bursts of explosive energy, one bright, the other deep and shadowed.

The two exchanged blow after blow mid-air, Sen’s twin swords spinning with incredible precision. Every swing of his light blade left streaks of blinding energy, slicing through the darkness with searing heat. His dark sword moved like a whip, arcs of black energy trailing from its edge, freezing the air and splintering it with each strike. The Zagon met him, claw for blade, wing for strike, its massive arms swinging with immense weight. Each clash released shockwaves, rippling the air and cracking the stone far below them.

At one point, Sen flipped backward, using his dark sword to create another frozen trail in mid-air. He glided along it like it was solid ground, then kicked off into a spiraling dive, both swords crossed behind him, building power. As he spun, his light sword gathered intense heat, igniting in a flare that burned white, while his dark sword condensed freezing mist until it dripped shards of black ice. He collided with the Zagon from above, slamming his blades downward in an X-shaped arc. The impact detonated, one half scorching in a burst of fire, the other freezing the creature’s hide solid, creating deep cracks that splintered outward.

But the Zagon wasn’t finished. It roared in fury, flexing its wings and swinging them like massive blades. Sen barely ducked beneath one as it sliced through the air, kicking up a cyclone of debris. The other wing clipped him, sending him tumbling, but he twisted mid-fall, planting his light sword downward. It ignited in a sudden blast of radiant force, halting his descent as he catapulted back toward the monster with renewed momentum. His dark sword followed, carving through the air as he whipped it in an arc, sending jagged spikes of black ice hurling toward the Zagon’s eyes.

The hybrid ducked low and retaliated, opening its maw and releasing another Intergy beam. Sen spun out of its path, dragging his dark blade along the air behind him. In its wake, a swirling spiral of shadow energy formed, a vortex that absorbed the remnants of the beam before flaring outward. Sen leapt through the vortex as it expanded, both swords outstretched, cutting twin paths through the darkness and light. His blades connected with the Zagon’s claws again, grinding against them in a fiery exchange, sparks and icy shards flying in every direction.

Their fight tore across the sky and through the broken city below. At one moment, Sen dashed low across a frozen path of darkness, skating over the surface while his swords sent arcs of power at the Zagon’s legs. The next, he launched himself upward with a burst of light, leaving behind a fiery explosion, before raining down beams of concentrated Intergy from above, both dark and light, alternating in a deadly pattern. The Zagon blocked some, its wings absorbing the strikes, but others found their mark, scorching its arms and freezing its side.

As Sen descended, he combined both energies in one final strike, spinning his swords in opposite directions. Light spiraled in one direction, darkness the other. When they crossed, they exploded in a shockwave of raw Intergy. Sen’s body streaked through the blast, his arms drawing back as he prepared for a devastating double slash. He passed the Zagon’s chest in an instant, blades striking true. A massive cross of energy carved into the beast’s torso, both seared and frozen at once. The Zagon screamed in pain, wings flaring, stumbling back through the rubble, steam and smoke erupting from the wound.

Sen landed hard but steady, one knee to the ground, his swords humming in his hands. His breath was heavy, but his eyes were locked on the Zagon as it struggled to rise again.

Sen (thinking): Damn… I’m running low on Intergy.

Sen’s breathing came ragged now, his body weighed down by exhaustion and the heavy drain of Intergy loss. His grip tightened around the hilt of his dark sword, the flickering shadows dimmer than before, but he wasn’t finished yet. With a sharp exhale, he hurled the dark blade toward the Zagon’s leg. The weapon spun end over end in a streak of black mist, trailing jagged frost in its wake. It struck home with brutal precision, stabbing deep into the monster’s ankle. A pulse of cold energy exploded from the impact point, ice spreading in an instant, locking the Zagon’s leg down in a thick prison of blackened frost. The beast snarled, yanking against the ice with raw power, wings flaring as it tried to break free. But Sen was already moving. He took what remained of his the light sword now humming fiercely in his grip. With a low growl of effort, he launched it in a shining arc toward the Zagon’s face. The sword spiraled through the air, a comet of golden light, before slamming directly into the creature’s eye. A blinding flash erupted on contact, searing heat and radiance exploding in its vision. The Zagon reared back, howling in fury, blinded and disoriented. That was the opening. Dain’s eyes lit up, fire crackling violently along his arms as he saw his chance.

Dain (shouting): Now!

Shera didn’t hesitate. She surged forward, sweeping her arms in a wide arc, and the wind obeyed. A roaring gust launched Dain like a cannonball, propelling him through the air in a streak of fire. His body ignited with flame, his fire sword trailing molten heat as he bore down on the Zagon’s frozen leg. The beast was still reeling, claws slashing blindly, wings flapping in fury, but its ankle remained trapped under the thick frost. In a heartbeat, Dain closed the distance, landing hard and driving his flaming blade straight through the Zagon’s knee joint. The sound was a sickening crack as fire and steel met frozen flesh and shattered bone. Flames burst from the wound, engulfing the monster’s entire leg in a violent inferno. The Zagon roared in agony, its balance collapsing as it toppled sideways, crashing hard into the broken ground. Smoke and steam billowed from the mangled remains of its leg, the ice now fractured and the flesh beneath burned raw.

As Dain’s blade tore free from the Zagon’s mangled leg, Sen was already bracing himself, his hands trembling with the force of what he was building. Dark and light Intergy swirled around his arms in chaotic harmony, two opposing forces compressed together into a dense sphere of raw energy, flickering between blinding brilliance and absolute shadow. He exhaled slowly, sweat tracing lines down his face, his focus unshaken despite the exhaustion pulling at him. The hybrid Zagon snarled through its pain, wings spasming as it tried to rise again, dragging its broken, flaming leg behind it. Its body was scorched, battered, and crippled, but its rage kept it moving. Sen’s eyes sharpened.

Sen (quietly): You’re done…

With a final surge of will, he thrust his hands forward, releasing the devastating beam of Intergy. The attack shot through the air like a comet, the fusion of light and dark spiraling as it carved a path straight toward the Zagon’s thick neck. In the blink of an eye, it struck with pinpoint precision. A thunderous explosion of light and shadow detonated on impact, sending a shockwave rippling through the ruined battlefield. The energy bored straight through the beast’s throat, leaving a perfectly clean hole punched through its neck, severing its spine. Its head jerked violently to one side as the severed muscles slackened. But even then, the creature refused to give in. Its clawed hands scraped at the ground, wings twitching weakly as it dragged itself forward by sheer primal instinct, guttural snarls rattling from its half-severed throat. Sen staggered, disbelief flickering across his face at its tenacity.

Dain stepped forward, eyes burning with a different fire, one Sen hadn’t seen before. Dain spread his arms wide, gathering every flicker of flame left on the battlefield, drawing heat from the ruins, from his own Intergy, and from sheer determination. The air shimmered, the temperature spiking as he pulled the fire into a single spiraling column. It twisted violently, growing taller, hotter, and faster with every rotation until it became a roaring tornado of pure flame. The inferno rose high into the sky, its base swirling around the struggling Zagon like a vortex of molten death.

With a sharp gesture, Dain slammed both hands down, commanding the tornado to collapse inward. Flames consumed the Zagon, the screaming winds feeding oxygen into the heart of the blaze, intensifying it into a white-hot crucible. The creature writhed within the storm for only a moment before it was lost to the fire, its roars drowned in the deafening roar of Dain’s creation.

Sen stood there, staring in astonishment as the tornado blazed out of control for several seconds more before finally burning itself out. What remained was a smoldering crater, ash swirling where the Zagon had once been. Dain turned slowly, his chest heaving from the exertion, sweat streaking his soot-covered face. He glanced toward Sen, the usual seriousness in his expression replaced by a cocky smirk that said it all. Then Dain fell to his knees in exhaustion. Sen approached him

Sen: Good timing.

Dain: You too. Taking that monster on your own like that.

Sen blinked for a moment, still catching his breath, then gave a faint, exhausted grin.

Dain: I was going to kill you for putting yourself in danger like that…

Shera approached.

Dain (to Shera): Thanks for sending me forward.

Shera: I wish I could’ve done more.

Dain: You did just the right amount.

Sen: And that’s what gave me the opening to blow its neck.

Shera looks to the horizon.

Shera: We should really find the others.

Dain gets back up on his feet.

Sen: Yeah, let’s go.

The three of them stood in the smoldering aftermath, the wind carrying the acrid scent of ash and burnt flesh as it swept through the ruins of Allatora. Sen and Dain exchanged a final nod of silent respect, while Shera took one last glance at the distant fires still burning in the fractured skyline. Without another word, they moved together through the debris-strewn streets, battle-worn but unbroken. Their steps were steady, their resolve hardened, as they made their way toward whatever fight awaited them next, ready to reunite with their team and face whatever came next in this war-torn city.

The ruins of Allatora smoldered beneath a bruised sky, the air thick with smoke and the distant screams of dying Zagons fading into eerie silence. Footsteps echoed over broken stone as Sen, Dain, and Shera pushed through the rubble, their bodies battered but still upright. They moved quickly, urgency cutting through their exhaustion as they scanned the devastation for their teammates. Then they saw them. Makota was knelt over Ira’s unconscious body, his hands trembling as he hovered them above her scorched skin. The burns along Ira’s arms and side were far worse up close, raw, angry wounds that seemed to pulse with every shallow breath she took. Yerah sat nearby, helping as much as she could, beads of sweat rolling down her temple. Her chest rose and fell in ragged bursts as she tried to focus the last of her Intergy on Ira’s burns, but it was little more than a faint chill now, fading as quickly as it formed. Makota’s jaw was tight, frustration and fear raw in his expression as he forced more energy into his healing, but it wasn’t enough.

Sen was the first to move. He rushed forward, dropping to one knee beside Ira, his hands already glowing faintly with the controlled pulse of his Intergy. He placed his palms gently over the worst of her burns, warmth radiating outward in steady waves. The golden glow softened the brutal injuries, the harsh edges of torn flesh knitting together slowly under his touch. Makota exhaled sharply, relief flashing across his face as he lowered his hands, shoulders slumping. He didn’t say anything at first, just sat there staring at Ira’s face, watching the tightness in her expression begin to ease as Sen worked. But then, without warning, Makota turned away, his feet carrying him unsteadily toward Shera. His arms wrapped around her the moment he reached her, holding her tight, his face buried against her shoulder.

Makota (voice muffled): I’m not good enough for this.

Shera was still catching her breath, but she didn’t hesitate. She hugged him back just as fiercely, her fingers digging into his back as she squeezed her eyes shut. For a long moment, neither said anything. Just held on. Dain stood nearby, his chest still heaving as he watched Sen work on Ira.

Dain: You did good, Makota. You kept her alive.

Makota shook his head, his voice strained.

Sen (interrupting quietly): It’s fine. She’s breathing.

Makota nodded, swallowing hard, then released Shera from his grip and walked back toward the closest wall and sat rested it. Shera joined him Sen to heal Ira. Yerah shifted weakly nearby, tired. She noticed Sen glanced over at her with a faint smile.

Sen: Hey.

Yerah (exhausted): Hey.

Dain gave a look out the horizon.

Dain: There are still Zagons out there.

Yerah: There’s still a giant one.

Shera: That dragon looking Zagon.

Makota: I seriously don’t know how we’re supposed to take that one on.

Shera: Where’s Zarnem?

Makota: He might still be chasing down that acid guy.

Sen: Zan.

Makota: Yeah, him.

Yerah: I don’t know how many more people we can try saving.

Dain: I can take on the big one.

Makota: What? No you’re not.

Dain: It has to be me.

Makota: You’re crazy.

Dain: Yerah is essentially wiped out. Sen and Shera needs to keep Ira alive. And from the looks of it, Sen doesn’t seem like has much in him left to fight. Makota, you have to kill the Zagons attacking the citizens.

Makota: And you’re going for that giant dragon?

Dain: That Zagon is more than likely a fire breathing creature. It’s my perfect match up. And from the distance, I can see it breathes fire.

Makota: I’m a water user.

Dain: And I can control flames.

Sen: I’ll jump out there as soon as I can.

Dain: Only if you’re able to.

Sen: Don’t do anything dumb.

Makota: Where the hell are the Allatorian soldiers?

Dain: They’re all dead most likely. This city was already destroyed when we arrived. Chances are, they don’t have a military to fight anymore hence why we’re doing all the heavy lifting now.

Makota shook his head in frustration.

Makota: I’ll take a look from a distance. I’ll do my best to help in anyway I can if I see a chance.

Dain: You just focus on protecting the people.

Dain tightened his fist. His expression becoming serious.

Dain: I’m heading out.

Dain took steps towards the chaos.

Dain: I’ll return. Promise.

Dain shot forward like a blazing comet, fire bursting beneath his feet with each step that barely kissed the crumbling ground before he was airborne. His body was wreathed in a swirling shell of heated Intergy, flames rolling off him in waves that scorched the sky around him. He clenched his fists, the heat intensifying as he zeroed in on the massive Wyvern Zagon soaring above the ruins of Allatora. Without hesitation, Dain rocketed upward, spiraling through the air like a fiery missile. The beast barely had time to turn its reptilian gaze before Dain crashed into its scaled jaw with a deafening explosion of flame and force. The impact sent a shockwave rolling through the sky, the Wyvern’s massive head snapping back as its wings flared wide to catch itself from tumbling. Dain didn’t slow. He rebounded in an instant, spinning in midair, flames coiling tightly around his limbs as he launched another devastating strike toward its throat.

On the ground, Makota sprinted into the chaos, water spiraling around his arms in relentless torrents. He caught sight of terrified citizens desperately trying to fend off smaller Zagons, Claws, Vipers, Sabers, and Aeris types swarming like predators around wounded prey. Without breaking stride, Makota slammed his palms into the ground, sending a crashing wave sweeping across the broken street. The surge bowled over two Saber Zagons mid-pounce, smashing them into a nearby wall with bone-snapping force. He turned sharply, his hand slicing through the air as a concentrated jet of water shot from his fingertips, drilling through an Aeris Zagon’s chest as it lunged toward a group of fleeing civilians. The people stumbled back in fear, but Makota shouted, urgency in his voice.

Makota: Get out! Now!

They obeyed, scrambling toward safer ground as he stepped forward, water swirling tighter around him like a living shield. He exhaled slowly, pushing through his exhaustion as he readied another barrage. There were still too many Zagons, and too many people relying on him to hold the line.

Dain (thinking): Fire against fire… stay focused…

The Wyvern Zagon roared as it steadied itself mid-air, its massive wings flaring wide. Flames burst from its jagged maw, rolling forward in a torrent of searing heat aimed directly at Dain. But Dain didn’t back down. His own flames spiraled around him, condensing into a glowing sphere of molten energy. He shot forward, meeting the Wyvern’s inferno head-on, their fires colliding in an explosive shockwave that lit up the dark sky in a blinding blaze. For a moment, it was like two suns battling for dominance, their flames twisting and clashing violently between them.

Dain gritted his teeth as he poured more Intergy into the clash, pushing his flames harder until they bent the Wyvern’s fire back just enough to carve a narrow path through the blaze. He slipped through the opening, rocketing to the side of the beast’s head, and hurled a series of concentrated fireballs into the scales along its jaw. The impacts detonated one after another, leaving bursts of blackened scales and smoke in their wake.

But the Zagon wasn’t done. It whipped its head around with surprising speed, its yellow eyes burning with fury. Its wings beat the air, summoning powerful gusts of wind that swirled around its jaws just before it exhaled again— this time, the flames were different. Spiraling faster, thinner, and more concentrated, the firestorm became a scorching lance, driven by the howling wind and compressed into a cutting beam of heat. Dain’s eyes widened.

Dain (thinking): It’s using wind to boost its fire… Damn it!

The Wyvern Zagon swept the searing lance toward him like a blade. Dain barely evaded the first slash, the edge of the attack nicking his arm with a hiss as it burned through his Intergy shield. He twisted in the air, flipping backward while sending a volley of flame spears in retaliation. They streaked through the sky, forcing the beast to rear back, wings folding in close as it braced against the impacts. Each spear struck with precision, but the Zagon’s scales held firm against most of them.

With a sharp exhale, Dain thrust his arms forward, releasing a dense ball of fire that expanded rapidly into a spiraling rocket. The projectile screamed through the air, catching the Wyvern by surprise as it attempted to shift out of its path. Too late. The rocket struck its wing with a violent explosion, tearing a ragged hole straight through the leathery membrane. Flames licked the edges of the wound as the Wyvern let out a deafening shriek, its flight faltering. It wobbled in the air, trying to stabilize itself, but the damage was done. It could no longer stay airborne.

Dain pressed his advantage. He surged forward, flames igniting beneath his feet as he dove toward the Zagon’s chest, dragging a stream of fire behind him. He twisted his body mid-dive, conjuring a whip of fire in one hand and snapping it toward the beast’s exposed side. The lash wrapped around one of its massive arms, searing through flesh and muscle before Dain yanked hard, pulling the limb away just enough to create an opening.

The Wyvern Zagon, furious now, planted its feet heavily on a crumbling rooftop, sending cracks spiderwebbing through the structure beneath it. Its tail lashed out like a spiked flail, smashing through a nearby tower as it swung toward Dain. He caught the movement at the last second and dove low, narrowly avoiding the deadly swipe. As he rolled across the rooftop, he thrust his hands out again, sending a spray of flames skyward to force the Wyvern back.

The beast snarled, wings twitching as it leapt from the collapsing building and crashed to the ground below. Dust and debris exploded outward as it landed heavily, the impact shaking the surrounding ruins. Dain hovered briefly above, eyes sharp as he studied its movements. He could feel the heat radiating off the Zagon now. It was still brimming with Intergy, its fires burning even hotter despite its injuries.

The Wyvern suddenly lunged, jaws snapping wide as it surged upward in a vicious leap. Dain swerved to the side, blasting a controlled jet of flame from his feet to stay ahead of the charge. He spun in midair, releasing two more flame spears that struck the Zagon in its exposed chest. One detonated on impact, sending shards of charred scales flying, while the other bored deeper, drawing a thin spray of dark ichor.

But the beast adapted quickly. It whipped its tail around again, this time lashing upward toward Dain in a spiraling motion. Dain brought both hands together, forming a barrier of spinning flame just in time to deflect the strike, though the force still knocked him back through the air. He recovered quickly, flipping once before launching a burst of flame from his palm to steady himself.

The two stared each other down for a moment, Dain floating above, fire swirling tightly around his body; the Wyvern crouched low, wings partially folded, smoke rising from its scorched scales. Its breathing was heavier now, but its eyes still gleamed with ruthless intelligence. The ground beneath its claws cracked and buckled as it prepared for another charge. Dain inhaled slowly, feeling the burn in his chest from overexertion, but he pushed the pain aside. His flames responded, growing hotter and brighter.

Dain (thinking): One mistake, and I’m dead.

The Wyvern Zagon unleashed another devastating attack, its wings beating furiously as it combined wind and fire into a swirling inferno that spiraled toward Dain like a living storm. The flames, sharpened by the howling gusts, cut through the air in slicing waves of heat and fury. Dain darted sideways, narrowly avoiding the searing blast as it tore a molten trench through the ground where he’d been a heartbeat before. Without wasting a moment, he rocketed himself toward the ruins of a nearby building, diving through a shattered window frame just as another stream of fire roared past. He landed in a crouch, chest heaving, the smoldering heat from the Zagon’s attack still licking at the crumbling stone around him. For now, he was hidden in the shadows, shielded by the broken walls. Dain looks at his hands.

Dain (thinking): I don’t know if I should do it. I might burn myself badly again…

The Wyvern Zagon let out a guttural snarl that shook the ruins around them, its burning eyes locking onto the building where Dain had taken cover. With a furious beat of its damaged wings, it launched itself forward, smashing through debris as it unleashed another torrent of flame, setting the rubble ablaze. Dain shot out from cover just in time, narrowly evading the searing wave as he rolled across the cracked pavement. He barely caught his footing before the Zagon was on him again, slashing with razor-sharp claws that cut through the air with terrifying speed. Dain ducked and weaved, narrowly avoiding each swipe, his lungs burning as he forced himself to stay ahead of the onslaught. But the beast was relentless. Anticipating his movement, the Zagon twisted its massive body and swung its tail in a wide arc. It struck Dain hard across his ribs, the impact sending him flying. He slammed into the side of a broken wall, dust and debris raining down as he crumpled to the ground, coughing and gasping for breath.

Dain (thinking): Damn it! And I can’t keep wasting Intergy to shield myself.

Dain gritted his teeth as he pushed himself up from the rubble, his body screaming in pain. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, but he ignored it. His gaze locked with the Wyvern Zagon’s, its blazing yellow eyes filled with primal fury. He could feel the heat radiating from its body as it stomped forward, wings twitching, flames leaking from its jagged maw. Dain wiped the blood from his chin with the back of his hand, his breathing ragged but steadying as he forced his Intergy to focus.

Dain (thinking): I have to go all in, even if I die.

The Zagon roared, a heatwave spreading from its maw.

Dain (to the Zagon): You wanna burn!? Let’s burn!

Dain pulled off his tattered, sweat-soaked shirt and cast it aside. His muscular frame, battle-worn and sweat evaporating under the raging heat, radiated raw power as his body temperature surged. His veins pulsed with fire, glowing faintly beneath his skin as flames formed around his forearms. His normally tan complexion shifted, hues of deep red, molten orange, and flickering gold as his very essence became fire itself. Sparks snapped from his fingertips, his entire form drying from the intense heat that now roared within him. The air around him wavered, bending under the suffocating heat he exuded. His breaths came slow, controlled, no longer labored, but fueled by the inferno he had become. Dain rolled his neck, fire coiling off his. His fingers clenched into fists. The Wyvern Zagon let out another monstrous roar, flames bursting from its jaws like a volcano ready to erupt. But Dain didn’t flinch. He met its gaze, his own eyes now burning with the same untamed ferocity.

Dain (smirking): Now we’re even.

Dain’s body ignited as he propelled himself forward, a comet of fire and fury streaking toward the Wyvern Zagon. The beast roared in challenge, its massive wings stretching wide, the torn membrane of its injured limb still smoldering from their previous exchange. With a powerful beat of its wings, it sent out a violent shockwave, kicking up fire and debris in every direction. Dain braced against the force, but he didn’t slow, he pushed harder, flames twisting around his fists as he charged straight for the monster’s chest. The Zagon struck first, exhaling a monstrous torrent of fire, but Dain countered with a blast of his own, meeting the beast’s inferno midair. The two flames clashed, creating a vortex of blazing heat that exploded outward in a blinding eruption. Dain used the force of the explosion to launch himself higher, flipping over the Zagon’s head, his body trailing fire as he twisted midair. With one precise motion, he slammed a flaming fist into the back of its skull, the impact sending a shockwave rippling down its spine.

The beast snarled in pain, thrashing violently, but Dain didn’t stop. He twisted his body downward, planting his hands against the Zagon’s burning scales and igniting a concentrated pulse of fire directly into its back. The beast screeched as the heat burned through its armored hide, its body writhing as it tried to shake him off. With a vicious flick of its tail, it finally connected, sending Dain crashing back to the ground in a whirlwind of fire and smoke. Dain rolled as he hit, his body bouncing twice before skidding to a stop against a crumbled stone pillar. The pain was unbearable, but he forced himself up immediately, knowing the Zagon wouldn’t wait, and it didn’t. The beast descended upon him, clawed feet striking the ground like meteors, the sheer weight of its impact leaving deep craters where it landed. Dain barely dodged as one massive talon carved through the ground beside him, missing him by mere inches.

He responded instantly, twisting his body and releasing a spiral of fire from his hands, the flames coiling like a serpent as they struck the Zagon’s exposed side. The beast recoiled, but instead of retreating, it countered with a sudden gust of wind, the powerful blast extinguishing Dain’s flames midair and sending him tumbling back once more.

Dain (thinking): Damn it—it’s canceling out my flames!

Steeling himself, he spread his arms wide, summoning every ounce of Intergy left in his body. The flames around him surged in response, no longer wild and erratic, but controlled, shaped by sheer force of will. The air shimmered as the temperature around him skyrocketed, his body pulsating with searing heat.

Dain (grinning, voice low): Let’s see you snuff this out…

The Zagon roared and lunged, wings flaring as it unleashed another firestorm, but this time, Dain didn’t dodge. He ran straight through it. His flames absorbed the attack, feeding off the intense heat, his entire being now a walking inferno. As he emerged from the blaze, his right arm cocked back, his fist wreathed in swirling embers.

Dain: BURN!!

He struck the Zagon square in the chest, and the resulting explosion was unlike anything before. A shockwave of pure, unrestrained fire burst outward in a blinding white-hot detonation. The Zagon screamed, its body jerking as white flames spread across its torso, burning deeper than before. Its wings flapped wildly, trying to put out the fire, but Dain pressed forward. He struck again. This time at its jaw, sending another blast of fire ripping through its throat. The beast staggered, reeling from the sheer intensity of the heat. But still, it didn’t fall. It refused to go down.

Dain (thinking): It’s still trying!

The Wyvern Zagon, despite the flames devouring its body, summoned one last desperate attack. It raised its head high, sucking in a massive breath, the air around them distorting as it prepared to unleash a final, devastating inferno.

Dain (panting, barely standing): Stay down!

Summoning the last of his strength, Dain slammed his hands together, compressing every last ounce of Intergy he had left into a single, concentrated sphere of fire. The ground cracked beneath him as the sheer heat warped the air around him, distorting the sky itself. With a final, defiant roar, he launched himself forward, his body a streak of molten destruction. The Zagon unleashed its fire at the same time, but Dain dove straight into it, punching through the flames as if they were nothing. His body became one with the firestorm, his fist blazing brighter than the sun as he struck the Zagon’s throat with everything he had left. The moment his punch connected, the air erupted, moisture in the air going completely dry upon impact. A deafening explosion tore through the battlefield, the sheer force sending a shockwave across the city. The Zagon’s roar was drowned in the violent detonation as its body was engulfed completely in the flames of Dain’s final strike. The impact shattered the ground, splitting the earth beneath them. Fire spiraled into the sky, illuminating the ruins of Allatora with an apocalyptic glow.

For a long, agonizing moment, the battlefield was silent. Then, the massive form of the Wyvern Zagon began to fall. Its body, burned beyond recognition, collapsed in on itself, smoke rising from its charred remains. It hit the ground with a thunderous crash, sending one last plume of fire and dust into the sky before finally it lay still.

Dain stood over it, chest heaving, body trembling, his skin still glowing faintly from the heat. His vision blurred, his legs weak. His breath came in ragged gasps.

Dain (weakly): My flames extinguished yours…

Then, Dain dropped to his knees, his strength finally giving out as the searing heat around him began to fade. His chest heaved with every ragged breath, flames still flickering faintly across his arms before dying out completely. Sweat poured down his face, mixing with soot and ash, dripping to the scorched ground beneath him. The once brilliant glow of his Intergy was now dim, his body trembling from the toll of the battle. Makota, bruised and breathing hard, and Shera, her winds gently swirling around them to push away the choking ash. Without a word, they rushed to his side. Shera immediately began to heal Dain’s injuries.

Makota: Holy shit, you’re insane.

Dain (breathing harshly): You got all the Zagons?

Makota: I did.

Dain: Where are the others?

Shera: Ira is back up. Sen and Yerah are finishing up with her wounds.

Dain: So, everything worked out then…

Makota: Yeah. All turned out in our favor.

Dain: Zarnem?

Makota: We need to find him next.

Sen, Yerah, and Ira approached through the haze of lingering smoke and ash, their steps slow but steady. Sen walked at Ira’s side, one arm ready to catch her if she faltered, though she held herself upright with quiet determination. Yerah trailed close behind, her expression tired but alert, scanning the area as they drew near. When they reached Dain, Makota, and Shera, there was a brief silence, just the sound of their labored breathing and the distant crackle of dying flames. Then

Shera: Ira! You’re walking!

Shera stopped healing Dain as her attention went to Ira.

Ira: I’m fine. Sen and Yerah were able to work well together.

Yerah gave a small smile.

Sen gave a faint nod, his gaze flicking to Dain.

Sen: Damn, bro. You actually used it. How burned are you?

Dain: Didn’t want to. I’m fine.

Dain looked at his charred skin.

Sen: Well, you did it. You took it down alone.

Dain (grinning weakly): Barely.
