Vang Flute Competition 2026
We are excited announce another year of the Vang Flute Competition, a highlight of our upcoming Flute Camp at Los Osos High School. Exclusively open to camp attendees, this competition offers a unique platform for young flutists to showcase their talents and vie for a price.
Participants will compete in various categories, with performances evaluated by our experienced team of flute coaches. This focused environment will provide each competitor with constructive feedback, designed to enhance both technical skills and artistic expression.
The winner of the Vang Flute Competition will receive a $100 prize and a commemorative plaque, celebrating their achievement and dedication to flute mastery. This event promises not only to spotlight individual talent but also to enrich the overall camp experience, fostering a deeper appreciation and passion for flute music among all participants.
The Vang Flute Competition will operate through a modern and accessible format, where competitors are required to upload video submissions of their performances. This digital approach allows participants to capture their best playing in a comfortable setting, ensuring that each competitor can truly showcase their abilities. During the evaluation phase, I will play each video submission for our panel of flute coaches, who will carefully assess and judge the performances. It’s important to note that I (Andrew Vang) will not be part of the judging process; my role will be to facilitate the viewing and ensure a smooth and fair assessment by our dedicated coaches. This method ensures transparency and objectivity, focusing solely on the talents and efforts of our young flutists.
***Note: Previous Winners are not eligible to compete again.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
For the Vang Flute Competition, all video submissions do not need to include piano accompaniment. However, competitors are also welcome to hire their own pianists for their submissions if they prefer live accompaniment for a more flexible and nuanced approach to tempo and interpretive control.
To submit your performance for the Vang Flute Competition, please upload your video(s) to YouTube, setting them as either public or unlisted. Clearly title your video(s) with your first and last name, followed by Vang Flute Competition 2026 in parentheses. If you are submitting two separate videos for different pieces, please number them in the order they are to be performed.
For example: “John Smith (Vang Flute Competition 2026) 1” and “John Smith (Vang Flute Competition 2026) 2” for the second. If you are submitting a single video containing all pieces, numbering is not necessary; simply title it “John Smith (Vang Flute Competition 2026)”. This titling convention helps ensure that your submissions are easily identifiable and organized for our review panel. You may set your video to private or delete it after the camp is over in case extra reviewing is necessary.
Participation in the Vang Flute Competition is completely free of charge, with the sole requirement being enrollment in the Vang Flute Camp. This ensures that all camp attendees have the opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive setting without any additional financial burden. Additionally, should you be selected as the prize winner, you are expected to perform at the final concert on July 11th, 2026. This performance is a celebratory culmination of your hard work and success during the camp and provides a platform to share your talent with peers, family, and friends.
Selected Repertoire (in performance order):
1. Prelude No. 2 for Flute and Piano by Andrew Vang
2. Flute Sonata Movement II: Aria by Otar Taktakishvili.
Submission Deadline: June 24th, 2026 11:59 PST All submissions afterwards will not be considered.
Winner Announcement: July 8th, 2026 (First day of Vang Flute Camp)
*** Note: If you are not completely aligned with the piano accompaniment recording during tempo changes, it will not affect your score. Other variables such as pitch, dynamics, articulations, etc. are evaluated.
